Peter & Patricia DeWit- THAILAND

Please pray for Peter and Patricia's daughters, Amanda, who has tested positive for H1N1 and Alycia, who appears to be at risk. Although Amanda has a low grade fever and is feeling a little weak, she is doing well and not showing any other symptoms. Alycia also currently has a low grade fever.

Prayer Focus: Please pray for complete healing upon Amanda and Alycia. Pray that Peter, Patricia, Amanda and Alycia will sense God's presence and love during this difficult time. Pray also that the whole family will be encouraged and strengthened throughout this ordeal and that their ministry in Thailand will continue to be greatly blessed.

Recent report: “Please pray for the training of Sunday school leaders and Good News Clubs leaders that will take place from September 19 to 22. We currently have 90 clubs touching 12,000 children in Senegal and three churches have already been planted through these clubs.”

Prayer Focus: Please pray that the leaders will be spiritually and emotionally encouraged and strengthened during these training sessions. Pray also that they will be inspired and equipped during their time together to bless these children's lives. Pray that the Holy Spirit would be present in the training sessions and that the leaders would be able to connect with each other as well.

Update: “Last year (during the ‘I Love My City” campaign”), we rejuvenated a struggling community centre and ran a kids' camp. This year, we returned to that community centre to not only run a kids' camp, but a youth camp, an English camp and a sports camp! We spruced up the community centre by cutting back the bushes, mowing the lawn, and painting a wall in their main hall. We also sanded, stained and painted a nearby playground. While that was happening, we painted kids' faces, did crafts and played soccer with them. Eight kids came to Christ at the kids' camp and many of the teens who were at camp also came to church on Sunday! Overall, the week was a great success. We now have enough momentum to start youth ministry in Nitra. Youth Alpha will be starting up in September, and while we personally won't be involved, I (Christina) am giving guidance to the team in Nitra based on our experience here in Sala.”

Prayer Focus: Praise God that the “I Love My City” campaign in Slovakia went well. Pray that God would continue to work in the hearts and lives of the youth and children who were involved in the camps. Pray specifically for Sisa, a girl who received Christ during the youth camp. She is receiving a lot of opposition from her family, who fear she has joined a cult. Pray that God would strengthen and encourage Sisa as well as touch the hearts and lives of her family.

Oct 12-14th: Conference on the Ministry

"An Inspiring Leadership" will be the theme of our next District Conference on the Ministry that will be held at the Centre Évangélique in Laval on October 12-14th.

We are already excited about getting together again to fellowship, worship, pray and allow the Holy Spirit to renew our minds and hearts.

The general theme will be An Inspiring Leadership, which is one of our District core values.

Pastor Jonathan Smith (Evangel Montreal) will be our main speaker and will share along the following lines:

"Finding the catalytic 'WHY' for change"

"Engineering lasting-healthy change"

"Preparing yourself for change"

Pastors Mario Sassi and Guy Gosselin will also be speaking to us.

In fact, our prayer, need and desire is that the Holy Spirit will be the main speaker and use His servants as He pleases!

Let us pray and plan to come with an expectant heart!

Last Reminder: Coaching Training with John Caplin

September 17th and 18th, 2010 will be held a new two-day training session in Coaching with Rev. John Caplin, quite an expert in this field. This bilingual training will not be only theoretical, but also very practical. All those participating will be offered some follow-up if they request it.

Thanks to one of our District churches, we will be able to provide this training at half the actual cost. If you register before September 10th, cost will be $150, including the notes and three meals. After this date, the cost will be $190.

For those who will have to stay in a hotel, some rooms have been reserved at the Dauphin hotel in Longueuil until August 16th. You should call directly at 1.800.646.0110.

Just mention that you are with the Quebec District to get the rate of $91.95 plus taxes for one or two people. After this date, the rooms will not be held for us.

Rev. Saul Ho New Pastor of Montreal Chinese Pentecostal Church

On August 1, 2010. Rev. Saul Ho was elected with an overwhelming majority to be the new pastor of the Montreal Chinese Pentecostal Church (1968 till now). He succeeds Rev. Donna Yee, who has gone back to Malaysia, to become the fourth senior pastor in the history of the church. Actually, he was the second and the longest senior pastor in the church (1979-2001).

The church is located in Chinatown, Montreal, near the City Hall, Palais des Congres, Hydro Quebec and St. Luc Hospital. It attracts people from all over metropolitan Montreal such as St. Vincent de Paul in Laval to the East, Ville St. Laurent to the North, LaSalle and Brossard to the South, and Pointe Claire to the West. The church is a bilingual church with English and Cantonese.

After nine years of successively pastoral transitions in MCPC, his priority is to stabilize the church first. In 1998, he has initiated the building of a gymnasium, so he will help the church to develop a strategy to utilize this facility to reach out to the growing population in the neighborhood. Since education is very important to a Chinese family, most of the members from 40 and younger have completed university education. Under his previous leadership, the church used to have a strong university outreach, with 2 university groups and one youth group meeting every Friday night totaling around 45-60 people. This remains a priority to revive their Friday ministry to this age group. During recent years, the church is also blessed with many children, therefore it is also important to raise this next generation by putting together a vibrant children program and at the same time use it to attract children and their parents.

He is taking a mini-Sabbatical until October 1, when he will take office.

It is quite understandable that, out of the many churches across the province, some may be going through a time of transition.

Let us ask God for His guidance and wisdom for the pastors, church boards and our district leaders that His will may be done in all things.

The Master of the harvest always has a good plan and knows perfectly how to meet the needs of His people.

A Youth Pastor in Rimouski

Pierre-Luc Tardif, his wife Cindy and their little girl Éliana have just moved to the Rimouski are as of August 28th. Pierre-Luc will be the new Youth pastor while working as a truck driver part of the week. Their coming is an unexpected answer to our prayers as we had no youth leader since last Fall. Emotional Abuse in the Local Church

Is your church a safe place for victims of emotional abuse?

"In the pews of every church, including yours, are women who are victims of abuse," wrote Brenda Branson and Paula Silva in their book, Pastor's Guide—Dealing with Domestic Violence.

Silva is co-founder and vice president of FOCUS Ministries, Inc., one of the few Christian ministries devoted to helping victims of domestic violence and educating pastors on abuse. For Christians and non-Christians alike, the nature of domestic abuse is psychological.

"Emotional abuse is always a component of physical, sexual, and verbal abuse, but it can also stand alone," she says. "In all cases of abuse, the perpetrator uses intimidation, humiliation, isolation and fear to diminish their victim's sense of self and sanity."

Making your church a safer place

Naturally, Christians in emotionally abusive relationships turn to their churches and pastors for help. Some feel loved and accepted unconditionally; others walk away more deeply wounded.

Dr. Tim Clinton, President of the American Association of Christian Counselors, says the impact of emotional abuse can wreak havoc on one's spiritual life.

"It's tough to believe in the fidelity of God, if all you're experiencing is ongoing abuse in your life," he says.

He challenges churches to take time to address these kinds of issues because "it deeply impacts how these women do intimacy with the Father. If our goal is spiritual vitality—spiritual growth and formation—we need to train people in how to do relationships and intimacy better."

Paul Hegstrom goes a step farther, saying that the church often turns a blind eye when confronted by someone who has been emotionally abused.

"It is a sad state of affairs in the church that when a woman has been abused, it seems that the congregation, her friends, and her clergy shy away from dealing with the situation," he writes in Angry Men and the Women Who Love Them—Breaking the Cycle of Physical and Emotional Abuse. "She feels forsaken by those she should be able to lean on the most."

Forsaken, Hegstrom says, because of an incorrect interpretation of the Scripture.

"Many times in a Church world, submission is held over the heads of women by men who are emotionally manipulative or abusive in order to get their way and maintain power and control."

Someone like Mark?

He and his wife Janet signed up for a Bible study. Mark instructed Janet not to speak during the Bible study, telling her "women are to keep silent in the churches" (1 Cor. 14:34).

Although Janet had questions, she remained silent in order to "submit" to her husband. Like many abusers, Mark distorted Scripture to manipulate his wife's behavior.

"Ephesians 5:24-28 reminds us that as Christ died for the Church, a man should give his life for his wife," writes Hegstrom.
